Dolní Benešov is a small town in a valley on the left bank of the Opava River. Zábřeh is also part of the town.

The town is first mentioned in 1312. The municipality gained town status in 1493 and regained it on 1 February 1996. The castle, with its Gothic core, stands in an English-style park and contains a ceremonial hall and a castle chapel. A system of ponds lies nearby, including Nezmar, Bezedno, Přehyně, Bobrov, Rakovec and Chobot.
