Markvartovice lies in the Hlučínsko region, about 4 km north-east of Hlučín, between the Opava River and the Polish border. At the beginning of 2026, the village had 2,218 residents.

The first written mention of Markvartovice dates from 1377. At the northern edge, in the Hříbovec area, stands the early Baroque Chapel of the Holy Trinity, with a triangular ground plan. It was probably built in 1652, badly damaged in 1945 and reconsecrated after repairs in 1947. The Vlastivědná educational trail runs through an area containing structures from the Czechoslovak fortifications at the village’s northern edge.
